Cynthia Hathaway is seeking the strange and wonderful. As a designer she brings peripheral expertise into mainstream systems of thought and practice, including food production, to ignite 'what ifs'. A number of hobbyists, such as giant vegetable growers, apply their skills in the production of public 'alternative wonderment'.
I will show designs in which giant vegetables are agents of making a mess of closed systems. Accompanying me, is Brad Wursten, Dutch champion giant vegetable grower and XXL-inspirer. He was born in Canada and started growing vegetables at a very young age. Since 2004 he has been growing giant pumpkins in The Netherlands. In 2007 he initiated and became president of the European Giant Vegetable Growers Association. He holds several records. We will speak with him about the importance of back yard innovators.
