The 5-day Food Friction workshop at ArtEZ product design organised by Katja Gruijters was an exiting event! Students were enthousiastic and we opened this year with a bang. The workshop included different lectures and themes by interesting designers: Food friction by Katja Gruijters, Future Peripheries by Thor ter Kulve, Crash test by Muslin Brothers and Body & Object by Jihun Youn.
For Katja Gruijters every project starts with a question. Many people think that eating is just something you do – a necessity. At the same time it’s part of a culture as it has close links with other activities, rituals and interaction in society. So Katja’s work always centres around people and their environment. Food in general is subject to lots of regulations in modern society. Some of these regulations strike Katja as odd. Given the sometimes extreme food regulations imposed by the EU, Katja is challenged to come up with concepts that force her audience to redefine the way they perceive food.
